The Breed

Declared the "Horse of Canada" by an act of Parliament in 2002, our Canadian Horses are the decendents of the first horses brought to Canada in the mid 1600's by the French settlers in Quebec .  Because of the isolation of the area, these settlers bred a horse that was able to thrive through the harsh conditions - including the poor quality of feed - that existed at that time.  This horse had strength, stamina and extremely good feet and legs.

As North America opened up, breeders from elsewhere discovered these traits in the Canadian Horse and they moved south and west where they became part of the foundation of most of the breeds developed in North America.  The Quarter Horse, the Standard Bred and the Morgan all have Canadian Horse ancestors.

Today Canadian Horses are used in all equestrian endeavours - from jumping and dressage competitions to driving and Western saddle.   They are particularly popular with junior competitors where their easy temperment and forgiving nature make them an extremely desirable companion.
